Bespoke Learning came into being by chance. The founder, Sophia (Pinto) Lein, is a graduate of Northwestern University. After graduating a half a year early from college, Sophia began to look for some part time work in early March and was approached to be a Chinese tutor for a student at her alma mater (The Blake School). Sophia began tutoring Chinese to a senior student that had fallen behind in Chinese. Because of the success in such a short period of time, she was asked to be a full-time tutor. For the remainder of the school year, Sophia was at the student’s home almost every day and also went to the high school to meet with teachers. Word spread of Sophia’s success with that student and she was approached by another family to tutor their student. As the school year ended, so did the tutoring. Sophia took on a 2 month internship in Beijing, China and came back to the United States and began a full time job at a small financial firm downtown Minneapolis. Upon being at the financial company for 6 months, Sophia noticed she really missed using her Chinese skills as well as the joy she got out of tutoring. The opportunity truly presented itself when she was again asked to tutor in Chinese for part of the summer. Sophia made the decision to leave the corporate world as a twenty-three year old and start her own company, Bespoke Learning. Bespoke Learning was established as a Limited Liability Company on July 8th, 2013. Bespoke Learning is Sophia’s dream of combining many elements that she loves: education, Chinese and the ability to work on a personal scale with each student.
